Ceasefires and Violations (June 2022–June 2025)
August 2022 Ceasefire (Israel-Palestinian Islamic Jihad) Between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Gaza ended with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire on August 7, 2022.The ceasefire was described as fragile but held initially, with no specific violations reported in the immediate aftermath. However, underlying tensions persisted, and no specific count of violations is documented for this period. 2.November 2023 Ceasefire (Israel-Hamas): A four-day truce began on November 21, 2023, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, involving hostage and prisoner exchanges and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza. The truce was extended but collapsed on December 1, 2023.
January 2025–March 2025 Ceasefire (Israel-Hamas) A three-phase ceasefire began on January 19, 2025, mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar, aiming to release hostages, increase aid, and withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza. The first phase ended on March 1, 2025, but the truce collapsed on March 18, 2025, when Israel resumed airstrikes. Gaza’s government media office reported 265 ceasefire violations by Israel as of February 12, 2025, including the deaths of 118 Palestinians, with specific incidents like the killing of 13-year-old Zakariya Barbakh in Rafah on January 20, 2025. Middle East Eye reported 155 Palestinians killed during the truce before the March 18 resumption of major hostilities. On March 18, 2025, Israel launched surprise airstrikes, killing over 400 Palestinians, effectively ending the ceasefire. The US supported Israel’s actions, with the US ambassador to the UN stating that Hamas was solely responsible for the resumption of hostilities. No direct US violations are documented, but its backing of Israel’s actions, including arms supplies, was criticized as enabling violations by February 12, 2025, including 118 deaths. Additional violations include the aid blockade (March 2), electricity cutoff (March 9), and the final resumption of airstrikes (March 18).
